Merks to build “Orkla Biscuit Production” biscuit and wafer factory in Ādaži

The construction company Merks was selected as the builder of the new “Orkla Biscuit Production” biscuit and wafer factory. The total contract amount is almost 32 million euros and it foresee the construction of a new biscuit and wafer factory in Ādaži. “Merks” will start the preparation for the construction work in October this year.

“We are delighted to start a very important stage in the construction process of the new biscuit and wafer factory in Ādaži. This plant is intended as a role model of sustainable production for the entire Orkla Group, which will also confirm Orkla’s long-term plans in Latvia, as well as the knowledge, abilities, and skills of our team. The new plant will produce biscuits and wafers for the Scandinavian and Baltic countries, as well as for other markets in the future, creating a wafer and biscuit production competence center in the region,” adds Toms Didrihsons, Chairman of the Board of Orkla Biscuit Production and CEO of Orkla Latvija.

The new plant will specialize only in the production of biscuits and wafers and will be the largest of its kind in the Baltic States and Scandinavia. In addition to construction, significant investments in new equipment and production lines will follow, creating the largest investments in the Latvian food production sector in recent years, which will create about 250 new jobs. In total, about 75% of the products produced at Orkla Biscuit Production will be exported. It is planned that the new plant will start operating in 2023.
